My September earnings are posted and aren’t terrible. Despite losing my best earning site in August, I still managed to break the $1000 mark. In a very unusual showing of restraint, I have not gone back and calculated what my earnings could have been if I hadn’t lost that site. But I do think about it. Often.
Onward and hopefully upward. I mentioned in my last post that I would be focusing on Christmas sales and that is still true. Starting in July or August I started building up a bunch of Squidoo lenses and hit my goal by the end of September. I won’t tell you my goal, but I will say that by the end I wanted to vomit but I pushed through.
Reading around I realize that I don’t put out as much content as many others, but I have finally started pushing myself and it feels good. I now spend the ~7.5 hours that my kids are in school working and trying not to distract myself with household chores. Okay, my house is a bit messy but get over it. I’m being productive.
The downside of all this hard work is waiting for the payoff. My daily emotions are so tied to my earnings and I hate it. I can be on a motivational and productivity high just to crash when I see just one Amazon sale in my account. Do my site visitors not realize that they hold my fragile emotional state in their hands? Buy people, buy! Where’s the humanity?
Seriously, I have thought a lot lately about not checking earnings for a week to see how that plays out but I don’t think I can do it. I’m sure some of you are thinking “just shake it off and know that your hard work will pay off eventually” or “think positive” to which I answer “Hello, I’m Carrie, nice to meet you”. I’m as much of a positive thinker as Obama is a job creator (translation for you liberals: I am not a positive thinker).
But let’s talk about my plans in a real general sense for the next few months.
Rebuild Deindexed Site
Shoot, I can’t remember what I said before, but my plan with the site I lost was to move the content to a new domain and start over. I have the new site up with admin pages (about, contact, etc) and a temporary homepage and that is how it will stay until January. I really would like to get that site up and running but 1) it was a distraction from my Christmas plan and 2) I need to really think through site organization. I want to rebuild the site well and frankly a lot of the content I have isn’t so great so it will take some time and thought to do things right. So for now the domain is aging and I will work on it after Christmas.
No offense to Bing, but I’m dreaming of a green Christmas. My focus at the moment is still a bit muddled, but here is what I have so far.
I have a bunch of squids on various topics and have been backlinking them a bit with BMD. I do have a Christmas site that is less than a year old and was sandboxed until recently. It is now getting maybe 2 visitors a day on longtails and doesn’t have a lot of content so I’m not too optimistic, but I’m keeping an eye on it. Lastly I have 2 Amazon sites but have been focusing on the best one – adding content and soon more backlinks.
My very general plan thus far is mostly just laying the groundwork as far as content. Right now I am adding content to my best Amazon site and will set up some backlinks. The problem with this site is that it isn’t a big Christmas gift type item but I did find two product subtypes within the niche that saw an uptick in searches last Christmas and am focusing on those. I’m feeling good about the progress I have made with this site but still not seeing many results so that is starting to concern me.
The Christmas site I have would obviously be a big focus if it were ranking better but for now I’m just waiting. I do wonder if I should add more content and push a bit more, but I can’t justify that effort now when I have stuff that is making sales.
Finally, I have some squids that look promising. There is always that issue of “why build up other people’s properties and split the profit” but at this time Squidoo gives me the best chance at capturing some Christmas traffic even though I have to play nice and share.
By the end of October I really want to focus on backlinking whatever is working best as far as traffic/sales. I printed out a 3Q calendar and have Black Friday circled and feel like it’s coming fast. I have very limited experience with Christmas sales from last year but it seemed like BF was the biggest day so I want to be ready.
Well, that is what I am up to in a nutshell. I’ll stop here since this is getting a bit long. How is everyone?
