I decided to go back and look at the post I made before the start of the summer and see how things actually turned out.
Here is what I said in June:
I hate to sound lazy and disconnected, but I had decided to take a break from IM activities to work on some personal issues and I just don’t have the time to track down the specifics. I also have taken a break from outsourcing backlinking while waiting for the algo shakeup to settle. Although I am trying a few things though to resurrect a sandboxed site but nothing to report there yet.
I have only about two weeks left until summer break so I will continue to be hands off until September for the most part. I have some ideas of how I would like to move forward long-term but no time at present to formulate a plan.
Plus, I am taking a different approach to IM in general, at least in theory. Since I have been working on sites for the last 2.5 years, a lot has changed – algos, backlinking methods, affiliate stability, etc. I’m feeling like I have to milk whatever is working at the moment and not assume that anything is forever. So rather than plan out stuff now to work on in a few months, I’d rather just wait and see what is working in a few months and go from there.
Well, what I said wasn’t entirely true. I did continue to do some work on my sites and had some good and bad outcomes. Interestingly, my feeling to “milk whatever is working at the moment” is my new strategy for the remainder of the year.
But here is a recap of what actually did happen this summer.
– I did get that sandboxed site I mentioned ranking and earning.
– I lost about 10 pounds since June.
– I gained back some motivation to make this IM thing work.
– My personal stuff was mostly home renovating and decorating – made little progress.
– I’ve realized I really hate home improvement stuff.
– Lost my best earning site (deindexed)
– I hoped to be earning more so I could pay someone else to do home improvements (huge pipe dream)
So what now?
Well, as of next week I will have about 8 hours all alone (kids at school) to focus on working. And what I hope to do differently than I have in the past is to really treat my online work more like a job. Meaning, I will try to work hard for those 8 hours and not intertwine household chores and errands.
See, I used to clean, do laundry or run to the store during the day and then work around that stuff. The problem is, I’m not very good at multitasking anymore. If I take breaks or don’t start working first thing, I’m just not that productive. This idea may not work out, we’ll see, but that is my intention.
As far as what I will be concentrating on – Christmas sales. More on that later. But I am hoping to post here just a bit more both more motivation and accountability and recapping the past few months seemed like a good place to start.
Hope everyone had a great summer!
