Google Revises Search Data?
I think this is great news: http://richquickreview.com/google-keyword-tool-huge-drop-in-search-volume-numbers/
I did a quick check on some of my top keywords and didn’t see a change. Not sure if it is coming, if the change is rolling out, or if only some keywords were affected. What I do know is that I have chosen keywords in the past and seen the volumes in the search tool continually decrease over time. If you looked at some of my sites you would probably say “Why the heck did she go after that keyword?!”. Yeah, I know.
I also know I have gotten some sites ranked well and never see the visitor volume I would have expected based on the search data. This is a common theme I have seen many, many people talk about. So maybe more changes will come?
Whatever the story, it would be great to get some accurate search volume data.

I agree that results from my high ranking sites don’t match anywhere near what you might expect from the keyword tool. Thanks for linking to this, I hadn’t heard of it but I’m sure it’s a good thing!

That’s why I like using other data centers besides Google, like WordTracker’s free tool, or Rank Tracker (has 15 centers of data to data mine).
And btw, good news?
Oh! Right. Sarcasm. =)
BTW – ComLuv’s not showing my recent post. It’s got you and Kidgas all over it.
Sorta.
Well..I mentioned you guys. I think.

No sarcasm, it is great news. Who wants to chase after a high volume keyword to find out it really isn’t high volume.
Yeah, commentluv is slow to update for me wherever I go.
I just found a variety of my 4k+ exact keywords were really like 200-300 a month.
It kind of sucks to put in the effort to only be fooled by bad numbers.
That’s where I was coming from, Sara -
I’ve bought domains that…yikes…

Sorry, Sara.
I think I’ll be going through all my KWs soon to re-evaluate.
So, Carrie – where do you propose to get your search data?
Just wondering how this will affect you and others in keyword research (and for the record I sure wish I had heard of Market Samurai or Rank Tracker before Micro Niche Finder….yikes, thing’s a beast.).

I’ll still use the Google KW tool. If anything, it’s hopefully better.
I like Market Samurai for competitive analysis but for search volumes it pulls the Global numbers from Google. I prefer to use local so I always check MS data against Google.

Have you ever noticed anything funky with G. Analytics?
Mine are squirrelly at the moment. I never quite began using Stat Counter or other service, other than the “Wassup” plugin, so I know their data is way off.

I don’t even use G. A. Never got around to adding it then once in awhile hear the conspiracy theories about having all your sites listed with Google so I have just avoided it. I track general data with the Statpress plugin or with Awstats.

Never heard of them! Do tell.

Not sure why I like statpress, but I put it on each site. You can see search terms and where people are coming from: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/statpress/
Awstats should be offered through your webhosting dashboard. I like awstats because it give you unique visitor information and you can look back through each month’s data. Statpress gives more real-time data I think.
Neither give as much info as Google Analytics, but all I usually care about are numbers of visitors and search terms used.

@ Carrie – I agree that it is a good thing. But a lot of people are just now realizing that Google tricked them into building up around low volume keywords. I have seen a LOT of complaining about the update, mainly because of the money spent on bad keywords.
I have used market samurai for a lot of my research for a while now, but a lot of people who are just starting out can’t afford all of the expensive tools, so this update to Google is a great benefit to anyone just starting out.
It seems like you can now actually get accurate, quality data from the big G. I hope this is a show of things to come and they start sharing even more data! =)

But, Matt –
Market Samurai actually uses the Google API…so did you notice a change in your stats?
I’m wondering if there’s a lag…personally I’m going to be using Rank Tracker for a bit yet – though I have the free trial of MS and must say:
WOW.
My only concern is with the shared data source: Google’s keyword data.

Thanks for the plugin link, will be checking it out, have you ever used the Wassup plugin?
Have you compared?

Good Question James, I wish I could give you an answer. But I stopped keeping track of Keywords when I dumped my previous business ventures, so I didn’t notice one way or the other.
The only reason I even knew they switched it is because people started blogging about it.
I am literally running 1 blog now, period (well, plus my business and personal blog sites but they just sit there).
I threw keywords and research and everything else by the wayside and am just having fun now. It’s kind of nice.
I’m not making a dime off of it yet.. and it’s costing me $$$, but it’s fun none the less. =)

I wish I could join you. If I’m not making money for the family, I get this crazy look from my pastor and my wife…
Not so much my pastor, but he’s got my wife’s back (he’s a helluva guy).
If blogging’s your thing:
Technshare
BizChickBlogs
Traffic Generation Cafe
Blog Engage
Just some places to start commenting, following, even guest posting: you will get noticed. A few days ago a gentleman named Wayne Howard stopped by — he’s one to watch as well…
All these places are great for getting traffic and getting known. Good community on that note, just some thoughts.

I actually signed up for blog engage and knew about Technshare. Haven’t heard of Traffic Generation Cafe though, will have to check that one out.
On the money front, I am truly blessed in that I have a full time job with the Air Force and a steady, guaranteed paycheck. It’s part of the reason I think I lag behind sometimes as my time is very limited, but it also keeps the lights on, so I sure as heck can’t complain!

sweet stuff. I think insta google gave us all more $$. The new adwords tool is definitely a LOT lower in terms of exact searches but i believe that it’s a lot more accurate. Better for us for keyword research. I researched 3k exact keywords but they ended up being 200-800 average. So it kinda sucks but since i made way 2 many sites i guess i’m doing ok.
Mr Seotools Blog
@ James
MS is awesome for rank tracker. I’ve gone through so many programs that were inaccurate. Almost all the ranks i get on Ms are correct!
But for keyword research i gave up on ms. I use the new adwords tool for the search #’s as they SUPER DIFFER from the ones in MS. The MS pulls from the old adwords tool.
So the 2 things i use MS FOR
Rankchecker + SEO Competition
Once i get keyword expected exact searches from new adwords keyword tool i just export and organize it then run through MS to check out top 10 competition.
