For those who have kept up, it looks like we will be moving after all. There are still some loose ends but I think things will work out. I mention this b/c we just put our house on the market so I am a little behind. Man, there is alot of cleaning involved!

So in addition to having kids out of school for the summer, I will also be busy keeping our current house clean for showings (with 2 kids at home all day!!) and preparing for a move. I’m hoping to still have a few hours online each week to keep some small amount of momentum going but it will be tough. I’m trying to draw out a plan of things I can do (mostly backlink building) that will be primarily hands off.

But, I do plan to get this little article backlinking test done this week. Last week I posted my article rewrites for two sites to EZA, Info Barrel and Squidoo. I also submitted those sites for a few bookmarks.

I have one article spun for each of my two niche sites (a previously submitted EZA) but still need to spin titles and resource boxes/links. These spun articles will be submitted to various article directories and to ArticleRanks with links back to my 3 new articles (EZA, IB, Squid) which link back to the corresponding niche site (homepage, inner page). In the past when I spun links I don’t think I was meticulous enough about moving the link placement. Still not quite sure how to do this easily, especially for AR which will be in-text links. In fact, since my article bodies are already spun it will be tricking placing the links but I’ll figure something out.

All of this is taking more time that I anticipated. Since I outsourced the 3 new articles/rewrites I was thinking this would go quickly but I forgot how long it takes to spin, especially the anchor/text links. Next time I think I may order 2 sets of articles (per site) from GAD and use one set for spinning (combine the 3 rewrites into one) and just add a few word spins. Then I’ll just have to create and spin titles and resource boxes. If anyone has any tips on how to speed all of this up I am all ears!

Also, I’ve been re-thinking my original idea of targeting the same keyword on my satellite articles (EZA, IB, Squid). At first I thought I would rather compete against myself than someone else for Page 1 on the big G. But another possibility is that there is only one weak site currently on Page 1 that can be overtaken and I want my site to be the one to take that Page 1 spot, not one of my satellite articles. So even though my satellite articles use the same keywords in the text, I’m going to backlink to those articles with another keyword as anchor text so hopefully they will not rank as high for my site’s main keyword. Now, if my satellites were set up as funnels to my site I may not care as much, but they are not set up that way.

Finally, Site 2 had a nice jump in rankings today – it was showing at #52 (was at #314 when I started). That movement must have been from the satellite articles posted last week and could be temporary, but I like it! Site 1 is staying put although the inner page I targeted moved up a few spots.

  1. Nice progress – can’t believe that jump! Sweet news, since you’re describing a lot of what I’m going to be doing (just different channels and a slight twist of lemon on my end).

Re: how to make it easier to get your articles spun and keeping a KW spot available in a messy, spun article…I’d recommend before you spin, use a token like %%=>KW<=%% or something like that.

You can even use NotePad++ or just MAR to change that out to your keyword string:

"Find and replace all" or "replace tokens" (in MAR)

    replace with: {keyword1|kw2|you get the idea}

The trick is to be sure your KW's are all the same part of speech, or you can use modifiers to make it grammatically correct (it doesn't matter if you modify your long tail KW to fit the context/syntax, you'll still rank for the KW).

A much cheaper solution for you might be to take your EZA and submit it to Human Rewriter – they've jumped up in quality in my experience.

I'm pretty sure their prices are still bottom dollar.

I have a question for you:

Can you explain what you meant by distinguishing your Web 2.0's (EZA/IB/Squid) from being a "traffic funnel"? What did you mean by suggesting they were not set up that way?

    Lastly:

Your web 2.0's should have different in-text kw's than what you're trying to rank for, and it sounds like you've just aired out that idea, but distinguish between your display URLs and the context of your articles themselves.

So, if you want to rank for "Best Blue Widget" that would be your display URL, but you might notice that "Buy a Widget" is a low-compete term (that you're not trying to rank for)…the latter would be your overall context.

I *know you know* that. I just have a quota for how long I make these comments. Gotta keep it real, Carrie. =)

I am REALLY excited with your results, though – so is Site #2 just getting link juice from web 2.0's that have been backlinked?

    NICE.

Can you explain what you meant by distinguishing your Web 2.0′s (EZA/IB/Squid) from being a “traffic funnel”?

My articles on those sites are just informational articles with backlinks to my site randomly placed in the body (IB, Squid) or in the res box (EZA). It wasn’t like I was pre-selling and trying to steer traffic to my sites – I was just shooting for good anchor text.

So, if you want to rank for “Best Blue Widget” that would be your display URL, but you might notice that “Buy a Widget” is a low-compete term (that you’re not trying to rank for)…the latter would be your overall context.

You lost me here. By “context” do you mean the anchor text?

I am REALLY excited with your results, though – so is Site #2 just getting link juice from web 2.0′s that have been backlinked?

The new juice is from the Web 2.0s which just have some social bookmarks of their own. I haven’t even juiced them yet with article submissions.

There were older BLs in place but it was primarily blog comments (and 2 EZAs). Maybe I tipped the scale in BL numbers, maybe I added some BL diversity, or maybe it’s just a temporary boost from the new links. I have a feeling the site will drop back again until I juice with the article submissions.

    Thx for the tips.

  3. Carrie says:

Oh yeah, my EZA article posted for Site 2 was also scraped by 3-4 sites with links intact. I got the pingbacks.

So I have picked up some extra, unintentional links for that site – maybe that is helping also.

  4. Just re-read your bit here and caught that the submission to AR has in-text links…same with UAW, you can have in-text links…I just wish I’d actually DONE THAT with this latest submission!

    DOH!

I just used iSnare/AR/UAW/TBS (the best spinner has its own directory)/MAS…

Ran out of time but tonight will be Magic Submitter and ArticleBot.

I BOMBED my Squid with 291 or so submissions from MAS…which is my new-found LOVE (I’m sure I’ll no less love AB)…but get this: the first time I submitted to MAS, I had checked the “Skip Directories That Do Not Have These Categories” button…

    And my submission was TWELVE.

    I just about cried.

    12?!! WHAT?!

I re-submitted, probably lost the original 12 in doing so for spamming them, not sure, but wound up with 291 (I think, it might have been like 273 all told).

Article Bot has 3 scripts/programming lingo it submits to, whereas MAS only uses the ArticleDashboard script…so I’m not sure how much better AB will prove to be, but will see.

I’m pumped. I think next month I’ll have some better numbers (my sites only made $605 in commission last month and I haven’t marketed them for 90 days).

    This is fun!

  5. Carrie says:

Dang James, you’re making me look bad. I’ve just had a busy week and my daughter is home (son next week) and I’m still spinning!! I really screwed up as spinning is taking way too long.

So far I’m not overly impressed with AB. I just don’t seem to end up with too many links. I’ll be curious to see your opinion.

  6. Whoops. I’m repeating myself (see new comment on your later post…). Getting old.

  7. Sara says:

Great work on your site #2′s rankings. Its nice to see some hard work pay off huh?
